Archaeologists recently discovered what is supposed to be the world's oldest winery, in Armenia. It is thought to be 6,100 years old. In a cave, already found back in 1997 and called Areni-1, they excavated not only presses, fermentation vats and drinking bowls but also pressed skinds, leaves and entire raisins of vitis vinifera. The cave apparently served for ceremonial purposes. With this discovery, Armenia once again beats neighbour Georgia in the race for the world's oldest vinification site.
