After the long lasting dispute over a new classification in Saint-Émilion had already been resolved in 2009 by a High Court decision, the French National Appellations Institute (INAO) has now issued a new set of rules about how this classification will be elaborated. It provides for a 7-member-panel of experts to name the future Grands Crus and Premiers Grands Crus, with none of the commission members coming from the Bordeaux area itself.
The commission has to taste a total of 10 vintages of all wines - for the next classification 1999 to 2008 will be rated -, in the case of upgradings from Grand to Premier Grand Cru even 15. The final judgement will rely to 50 % on those ratings, vineyard labour and vinification details making up for the rest. Winemakers who want to be part of the next classification prodedure must submit their application before January, 7th.
