No more Aussie Champagne

0

After the Euro-Aussie wine trade treaty has recently taken effect, European names of origin will benefit better protection than in the past. Even if not exported to the EU but to third countries, Australian products can no longer be sold not only under origin names like Champagne, Sherry or Chianti but also labeld with traditional indications like Amontillado or Auslese. On the other hand other, more terms referring to wine quality like Vintage, Cream oder Tawny can still be used. EU countries export currently (2009) wine worth about 70 million Euros to Australia, while the values travelling the other way round approach about 10 times that figure.
